To do…

Over the summer I have a few things I plan on doing to help me in my specialism and for my 3rd and final year in university. I originally planned on doing the combined masters in advertising however after looking into the individual modules and the layout of the next two years I decided against it. It seemed more of a business year whereas I would like to work more on my drawing and designs and quite like the idea of doing a dissertation where you can focus on any subject you like!

Sooo in the summer I will:

  • practice my drawing more, especially with marker pens
  • buy more pens!
  • practice using Illustrator, my confidence with Photoshop has grown through these last couple of projects but I am still unsure on Illustrator
  • read books on subjects of interest for my disertation- airbrushing, how the female image is portrayed in advertising, self image, psychology of advertising, how much have ads been digitally altered, etc.
  • find a placement in advertising

Overall I cant believe how quickly this year has gone & its scary thinking next year is my last year studying before looking for a job! Ive been contacting agencies for a placement over the summer and something may have come up so fingers crossed!

Along side the ‘Spontex’ advertising campaign I created I also made ads for Regatta, a company that produces outdoor clothing for children and adults. A product in consideration is called the ‘nanoshell’ which is an all in one suit for children which repels dirt, water and most muck that is thrown at it. My job was to create a campaign promoting the new mud resistant technology that could be used in magazines and for website banners.

These images are my final ideas for the campaign. I focused my designs round the idea that the company is apologising that the suit will only keep children clean and cannot help with other messes you might come across. Targeted at parents and grandparents I used stereotypical situations that they can relate to.

It was in this project that I became more confident in using marker pens for creating depth and tone in pictures. After working with a professional marker visualiser who has been in the industry for 20 years now the most valuable thing I took away from the experience was ‘dont be shy with markers, be confident with the lines you draw’. This helped a lot as Ive found the more confident you are in the drawing the better as the markers show up every little dot and line on the paper.

My thoughts

After my first advertising project I created I started to get a feel for what was needed and how the industry worked. I started working on my drawing techniques and I feel through my last project of creating a campaign for ‘Spontex’ cleaning products I have gained more knowledge on how advertising works and I feel I have found my feet a bit more with what I am doing.

I did not want to show the actual cleaning product in the adverts and thought about what cleaning means to people and how it is a chore. I also liked the idea that people take photo’s of things to preserve a memory and something to look back on. This lead me to combine the two and think of different situations that people keep photo’s, such as on walls, computer desks and in lockets. At first the ads seem fairly normal with pictures just hanging on a wall until you realise one of the pictures is a toilet. This humour aspect I feel will make the adverts memorable therefore promoting the brand and appeal to mothers who do the majority of the cleaning.

A could of my campaigns put into a magazine relevant to the target audience.

An advertising campaign I created for ‘Spontex’ household cleaning products. I focused on the idea of house proud mothers who like to keep things clean and the idea that people take photo’s to preserve special memories.
